Hello! My name is Jo and I specialise in lifelike watercolour pet portraits. I am a self confessed perfectionist which drives me to ensure that each portrait is finished to a high standard. I won't be happy until I have achieved a true likeness to your beloved pet.
I am always happy to answer any pet portrait enquiries.
I absolutely adore painting your pets in watercolours and the beautiful effects I can create with them. Watercolours have such a soft and delicate nature, making them the perfect medium for painting soft fur and for portraying our pets gentle and loving features.
Watercolours have always been my favourite medium to work with. They allow for a detailed and realistic portrait in a painterly fashion rather than being hyper realistic.
Watercolour pigments are able to layer one over the other easily, whilst remaining semi-transparent, meaning you can still see details and colours beneath. This semi-transparency allows light to bounce back off the paper, adding life to your pets eyes and other features.
The ability to layer the watercolours allows me to build up your pets fur gradually, creating so much texture and depth. It really is as though you could reach out and stroke the painting.
I have always been very creative, but it was my Dad who first introduced me to watercolours. My Dad lived up in the highlands of Scotland, and every school holiday I would be there with him. During these holidays, around the age of 12, we began painting watercolour landscapes together. We would sit at the kitchen table and watch "Simply Painting" with Frank Clarke on television. This wholesome programme would teach you how to paint a landscape scene with step-by-step guidance.
It is from these memorable moments with my Dad, that my love and passion for watercolours grew. He was very proud of my pet portraits in later years, and received regualar updates on each and every one.
I absolutely adore pets and I understand just how much joy they bring into our lives and what a big part they play in our families. We have always owned Border Collies in my family, and there is truly nothing better than the love and friendship of a dog! Pictured about is our beautiful Lottie and handsome Alphie. Unfortunately, we lost Alphie to cancer at the end of 2023 and Lottie, also to cancer, at the beginning of 2024. We are now down to just one, their biological daughter Rosie, who you can learn more about below.
Cats also hold a special place in my heart having owned several of my own. There is nothing more heart warming than when a cat decides to curl up in your lap, or those slow blinks...You know the ones I mean, true love!
It is such a pleasure to paint your pets and to learn about them and their quirks along the way. Ultimately, I love the reactions I receive when people see their portraits in person for the first time. To combine my two passions, painting and pets, makes me so happy and I am so grateful for your support of by small business!
Believe it or not, there was a time when I used to say that I could not draw or paint animals. It has taken years of patience and passion for my paintings to develop into the detailed, lifelike pet portraits you see today.
I have Instagram to thank for everything I have achieved and for the honour of painting your pets. It all started when I posted a loose watercolour sketch of my cat, only hoping for some nice comments, and never expecting to receive requests for pet paintings.
However, that it exactly what happened. I had a lot of requests for rabbits in the beginning. I experimented with various different techniques and styles, acrylics on canvas to pen and watercolour, until eventually it developed into what you see today. Delicate, detailed, life-like pet portraits in watercolours.
Rosie is our darling special needs Border Collie, daughter to Lottie and Alphie.
Rosie was born with Tetralogy of the Fallot, a rare heart disorder, and was given a life expectancy of 1-2 years. She is now 6 years old, turning 7 in May 2024. Although she can't go out for 'normal' walks, she enjoys a stroll around the village in her Innopet dog stroller, taking in everything around her, including passing cars, such as a Border Collie will do.
She is the most loving dog, having been hand reared by myself and my mum, and really is a very special girl.
Rosie's headshot in the image above, forms the silhouette in my pet portrait logo and is also the simple reason for it being rose pink in colour.
